THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday announced a proper scheme that would ensure 1000 sq ft houses and loan waiver for all who lost their homes in the Wayanad disaster. In the all-party meeting, CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that the rehabilitation will be done in two phases with a special package expected from the central government.
A single-storey house for every victim will be the target in the current phase. The foundation will be strong enough to build a second floor in the future. All houses will have the same architectural pattern. Priority will be given to those who have lost their homes in the landslides. Those who have shifted to rented houses or with relatives will be considered in the second phase. It was not specified where the township would be and when the construction would begin.
The rehabilitation package will ensure livelihood, maximum employability, vocational training for women, and farming facilities for farmers. People doing business in rented buildings will also be rehabilitated. In the disaster zone, the school will open next week. The experts will consider the options to rebuild the school in the same disaster site again. Along with Wayanad, the disaster victims of Vilangadu will also be rehabilitated.
Despite one month after the tragedy, Wayanad is struggling to make the much-needed recovery back to normalcy. Disbursement of initial funding has also been completed. A total of 17 families have completely perished in the landslides.
