New Delhi: Following the debacle in assembly election, the Congress party is gearing up for a generation change in the leadership. V D Satheesan is likely to be the opposition leader. As per reports, the high command has accepted Satheesan as the Congress parliamentary party leader.
The official announcement in this regard will be made on Thursday or Friday. The leadership decided to replace Ramesh Chennithala from the post after receiving a report from high command observers Mallikarjun Kharge and Vaidyalingam in favour of Satheesan.
Those who supported Chennithala claimed that he fulfilled the role of opposition leader by accurately raising allegations against the government. The observers had a one on one meeting with all 21 MLAs and most of them supported Chennithala regardless of group disputes. However, the young MLAs supported V D Satheesan.
Also the most of the MPs from Kerala supported Satheesan. Many of the political affairs committee members opposed Chennithala. Rahul Gandhi also favoured Satheesan. When CPM came forward with a total change of generation in the cabinet, continuing with Chennithala will not help in the long run, the party leaders assumed.It is learnt that K Sudhakaran will be suggested as the KPCC president. Also MM Hassan will be changed from the post of UDF convener. PT Thomas is more likely to replace him. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has more chances of being appointed as party whip in the assembly.
