Kochi: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kerala Police, probing theĀ sexual harassment complaint against director Ranjith, submitted the chargesheet to the Ernakulam magistrate court on Saturday.The case was registered following a sexual harassment complaint filed by a Bengali actress.According to Mathrubhumi News, Ranjith is facing charges under the IPC sections 354 and 509.The actress officially lodged a complaint against director Ranjith on August 26, 2024 in connection with sexual advances made towards her. According to her complaint filed with the Kochi City Police Commissioner, she alleged that the incident took place in an apartment in Kadavanthra in 2009.
Serious accusations have been made by several women actors against prominent figures in the industry, including director Ranjith and actors Mukesh, Jayasurya, and Edavela Babu, among others.
The surge in these allegations came in the wake of the release of the Justice Hema Committee report, which exposed disturbing accounts of harassment, exploitation, and the systematic mistreatment of women in the industry.The report, made public on August 19, after redacting the names of witnesses and the accused, noted that the Malayalam film industry is controlled by about 10 to 15 male producers, directors, and actors who dominate and exert control over the industry.
