Setback for govt in Arikomban case; cannot interfere in petition, says Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has rejected the petition filed by the Kerala government in connection with capturing rogue tusker Arikomban. The apex court clarified that it cannot interfere in the petition. The Kerala government filed the petition in the Supreme Court after the High Court issued the order.

The state government had sought a stay on the orders passed by the High Court by stating that the intervention of the High Court was a threat to the lives and property of the people. However, the apex court rejected the petition without considering this. The bench was headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. The court said that the decision of the expert committee appointed by the High Court was logical.

The state government tried to convey to the Supreme Court the practical difficulty of implementing the High Court’s order that a new place should be found for translocating Arikomban.

Arikomban has so far destroyed 52 houses and many shops in the Chinnakanal area. The government had said in the petition that Arikomban was responsible for the loss of life of seven people.
