Satheesan questions decision to impose KAAPA against Youth Congress worker

Kozhikode: Opposition leader VD Satheesan on Friday criticised the state police’s recommendation to impose Kerala Anti-social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) against Youth Congress leader Farseen Majeed, who organised the in-flight protest against chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

“CM said there are 19 cases against Farseen. Of these, 12 cases were registered for holding protests during the Covid-19 lockdowns. It is unclear why KAAPA has to be imposed now,” he said. Satheesan also questioned why the state government was reluctant to impose KAAPA on an SFI leader who has 40 criminal cases against him.

“It is worth noticing that 16 cases were registered against this SFI leader for attacking students using weapons. Besides, there are other charges such as attempt to murder, kidnapping, and offences against women,” he added. Congress would defend any move from the government to impose KAAPA on protestors, Satheesan said.

The Congress leader also questioned the decision of Kannur varsity to challenge Governor Arif Mohammad Khan’s decision to freeze the appointment of Priya Varghese. “The governor’s move to stay the appointment is as per the university rule. He only has frozen it. But, the University decided to file a case soon after the Governor issued a notice for a hearing to take action in the incident,” he added.

Satheesan also asked the Governor to examine the appointments made in the last six years in the state universities. The vacancies were filled with favourites of CPM, he alleged.
