Sanket Sargar bags India’s first medal in Commonwealth Games 2022

Sanket Mahadev Sargar bagged India’s first medal by winning silver in the 55kg weight lighting category at the Commonwealth Games here on Saturday. Sanket lifted a total of 248 kg but came second after suffering an injury in the second attempt. Meanwhile, Malaysian Mohammed Aniq bagged gold by lifting 141kg (249 kg total) in the third attempt of the clean and jerk stage. The bronze medal went to Dilanka Yodage of Sri Lanka with a total lift of 225kg.

Sanket, leading the game until then, injured his second attempt to lift the weight of 137kg after completing a lift of 135 kg in the first attempt.

Earlier, Sanket chose 135 kg for his first attempt in Clean and jerk, while Aniq Kasdan, trailed by 6 kgs after the snatch event, placed his first attempt at 140 kg.

The 21-year-old, who graced cattle to feed his family in Maharashtra, successfully lifted 113 kg in his third attempt to gun for India’s first gold in the Commonwealth games on Saturday. He was 6kg clear of 2nd placed Malaysia’s Aniq Kasdan in going into the clean and jerk stage.

Sanket goes top in the men’s 55 kg weightlifting final by lifting 111kg and 107 kg in his second and first attempts in the ‘Snatch’ round.

Sanket, who qualified for CWG after breaking Commonwealth and National Record at Singapore Weightlifting International 2022, overcame Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq, who managed the second best lift of the day with 107 kg, but failed to lift 111 kg in the remaining attempts.
