Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that the rescue operations in the landslide-hit areas in Wayanad are nearing completion. While identifying body parts recovered from the Chaliyar River remains challenging, the Chief Minister assured the media that rescue workers are trying to save lives without giving up hope.
“The rescue operation in the disaster area is in its final stage. Initially, efforts were concentrated on finding and rescuing those trapped in various locations. Rescuers risked their lives to save anyone showing even a trace of life. Identifying the dead bodies and body parts found in the Nilambur region is extremely difficult,” Vijayan stated.
A total of 215 bodies have been recovered, comprising 87 females, 98 males, and 30 children. Of these, 148 bodies have been handed over to their families. There are still 206 people missing. Currently, 81 individuals are receiving treatment in various hospitals, while 206 have been discharged and shifted to camps. There are 10,042 people in 93 camps in Wayanad, with an additional 1,707 people residing in 10 camps in Chooralmala.
The chief minister said 67 bodies are yet to be identified, and the panchayats will do the last rites. Referring to the rehabilitation efforts, Vijayan said a secure region will be identified, and a township will be constructed.
He said the education minister will visit the schools destroyed in the region, and the education department will take the necessary steps to ensure that the studies of the disaster-struck children will continue.
