Rain to continue in state today; Orange alert in 10 districts

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Rain will continue in the state on Thursday. Orange alert has been issued in Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded yellow alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha. However, no red alert (extreme rain) has been issued in any district.

A holiday has been declared in Wayanad for educational institutions. Schools functioning as relief camps in Kozhikode will remain closed today. Chevayur NGO Quarters High School, Kozhikode IHRD Technical Higher Secondary School, Kottuli GLP School and Anganwadi in Muttoli.

19-07-2024: The IMD has declared orange alert in the districts of Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod. Isolated heavy rain has been predicted. The weather department has defined heavy rainfall as rainfall of between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm in 24 hours.

Yellow alert

18-07-2024: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha.

19-07-2024: Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad.

20-07-2024: Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod.

21-07-2024: Kannur, Kasaragod.

A chance of isolated heavy rain is forecast. Heavy rains mean rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

There is a possibility of waterlogging on major roads / blurred visibility in vehicles and traffic jams.

Chance of waterlogging/flooding in low lying areas and river banks.

Falling trees can lead to power outages/accidents.

Partial damage to houses and huts is possible.

Landslides and landslides are likely.

Rainfall has the potential to adversely affect humans and livestock and damage vulnerable coastal structures.
