Plan to carry out suicide attacks in Kerala: Court sentences Riyas to 10-year rigorous imprisonment

Kochi: A National Investigation Agency (NIA) Special Court here on Friday sentenced Riyas Aboobacker to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for planning to carry out suicide attacks in Kerala. The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 1.25 lakh on him.

The court the other day found Aboobacker guilty under UAPA Section 38 ( membership of a terrorist organisation), Section 39 (support given to a terrorist organisation), and IPC Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy). He was also found guilty of attempts to recruit youths to the organization.
Aboobacker, an alleged ISIS activist, was nabbed by the NIA during the investigation of the terrorist outfits after the Sri Lanka blasts. According to the report submitted in the court by NIA, Aboobacker had decided to be a suicide attacker on behalf of IS and he had planned to conduct suicide blasts at various places in Kerala as directed by Abdul Rashid who is the major accused in IS recruitment case.
NIA had found out that Aboobacker and his aides had been working hard to propagate IS ideology in Kerala. Following this, the NIA interrogated him and received information regarding the plans for the suicide attacks. NIA submitted in the court the report in which two others were also named as the accused. They later became approvers.
