New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered to check the quality of ‘Aravana Payasam’ sold to devotees in Sabarimala Temple. Earlier, the Kerala High Court had ordered the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) to stop the distribution of ‘Aravana’ after traces of pesticide-laced cardamom was found in it.

The order was pronounced by a bench comprising Justices AS Bopanna and CT Ravikumar while considering the petition filed by TDB. The court also asked to examine whether the payasam was fit for human consumption.

Further, the apex court directed to conduct the examination in accordance with the criteria prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The court also instructed to hand over the test reports.

Earlier, the high court had barred the sales of more than 6 lakh tins of Aravana following the detection of pesticide-laced cardamom. Following which, the TDB approached the Supreme Court seeking to carry out tests on the samples.

Senior advocate V Giri and advocates PS Sudheer and Biju G appeared for the board. They also informed the court that the TDB was not planning to sell that set of Aravana packets to devotees anymore.
