Offended by ‘righteousness’ of circle inspector, minister GR Anil scolds officer over phone

Thiruvananthapuram: The phone call between food and civil supplies minister GR Anil and a policeman over a complaint of a woman has escalated after the minister found the officer’s reply unsatisfactory.

The minister, who represents Nedumangad constituency in the Assembly, called up Vattappara circle inspector Girilal to enquire about the complaint of a woman against her husband. The woman from the minister’s constituency, had approached Anil.

The CI, without letting the minister to complete, politely said he is on the case and will do the needful. When the minister continued, the CI said he will take the right action on the complaint. The CI also told the minister that the woman will be given protection.

Though the conversation was going smoothly, the minister then said he is recording the call and if anything happens to the woman due to inaction of the officer, he will be answerable. The talk gradually escalated and the minister lost his cool.

“I don’t normally call police stations [to dictate what they must do]. When a woman files a harassment complaint and I call you up on the matter, shouldn’t you be telling me that you will nab the accused right away?” asked the minister.

The officer then said that is not possible. “There is no one to protect us, sir. I will do what is right,” the CI told the minister.

Anil, who was offended by the reply of the policeman, said he should not be talking to the minister like that. The policeman said he had said nothing wrong. By the end of the audioclip that has surfaced, the CI is heard saying he will do the same no matter who tells him what to do.
