Thiruvananthapuram: After months-long uncertainty, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday informed the Assembly that the state government would retract its decision to entrust the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) with State Waqf Board appointments. The remark from CM came as a reply to the attention seeking motion moved by IUML leader PK Kunhalikutty.
CM Pinarayi said that the government would adopt a new system and make appropriate amendments to existing laws for appointments to the Waqf board.
“The decision to bring appointments under the purview of PSC was earlier discussed in the assembly session. It was not a secret. We also assured IUML that temporary workers on board would be made permanent. However, IUML objected to the decision only at a later date,” CM said.
In 2016, a meeting of Waqf board members decided to bring vacancies under the purview of PSC. Later, the assembly passed a bill based on this decision. CM pointed out that nobody objected to this decision back then even when the Subject Committee examined the bill in detail.
“Even though some Muslim organisations expressed concern, a meeting was convened to discuss the matter and they all agreed to back the government’s decision. So far, no further steps were taken to send the appointments to PSC. The government is planning to make amendments as per the recommendations from the Muslim organisations, ” CM said.
