No decision yet on PM’s visit to Sri Lanka: Chidambaram

Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram says, no decision has been taken yet on Prime Minister’s visit to Colombo to participate CHOGM this month. He termed as incorrect media reports that the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh is likely to attend the meeting. He was talking to news persons after a meeting with DMK chief M Karunanidhi in Chennai today. His comments come amidst political parties in Tamil Nadu stepping up pressure on the centre for boycott of CHOGM because of human rights violations by Sri Lankan troops on Tamils in the last stage of its war with LTTE.

Chidambaram said the matter is still under discussion and a final decision is yet to be taken. He said Individual Congress leaders have expressed their opinion.

Chidambaram also condemned the alleged rape and murder of Sri Lankan Tamil woman media personality Isaipriya and demanded a probe by the island nation’s government into the incident to punish those responsible. He said he had seen the video and he believes it’s real. The clipping telecast by Channel 4 in Britian shows a group of soldiers surrounding a half-naked Tamil woman claim to be the Tamil television presenter who had served in the LTTE. She was executed after being captured by the troops and not during the final battle as claimed by the government.

Sri Lankan government, however, dismissed the video as fake. Military spokesman Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasuriya said it is nothing new for Channel 4 to discredit Sri Lanka at important times such as the UN Human Rights Council sessions and the upcoming Commonwealth conference.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has boycotted the summit, citing Sri Lanka’s Human Rights accountability. Britain is sending Prime Minister David Cameron despite a strong lobby to stay away from the event.
