Mumbai gangrape: 1 person arrested; Centre seeks report

Mumbai: One accused has been arrested in the gangrape by five men of a woman intern photojournalist in Central Mumbai. The four other accused have also been identified, according to police sources. The incident took place last evening in Lower Parel area where the woman had gone for an assignment.

The 23-year-old woman was working with an English Magazine. According to police, the men tied up the friend who was accompanying her and raped the woman.The victim, who was admitted to Jaslok Hospital, had sustained multiple internal injuries. She is stated to be in a stable condition now.

A gangrape case was registered in N M Joshi Marg police station. Police picked up about 20 people for questioning in the case. They have also formed special teams to investigate the matter. Police will hold a press conference at 1.30 pm today.

Maharashtra Home Minister RR Patil visited the victim in hospital last night. He promised that those responsible would be arrested soon. Meanwhile, the opposition Shiv Sena and BJP have demanded Home Minister R R Patil’s resignation.

The Centre has sought a detailed report on the gangrape incident of a photo journalist in Mumbai. Union Home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said, he has spoken to the Commissioner of Police on the gang rape incident in Mumbai urging for stringent action. Talking to reporters in New Delhi he said, the incident is being investigated and the police have made arrests in the case.

The minister of state Home, R.P.N Singh said, the centre has urged for immediate action and sought a detailed report on the entire incident. He also said, harsh punishment should be meted out to the culprites of the Mumbai gangrape.
