J & K Govt. orders high-level inquiry into Friday’s clashes in Kishtwar ; Curfew continues for the second day today

Jammu: Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the Kishtwar clashes. Jammu Divisional Commissioner Shantmanu has been appointed inquiry officer. He has been asked to submit his report within three weeks.

Clashes between two groups on Friday left two people dead and more than 20 injured in Kishtwar district. Curfew, imposed on Friday, continued for the second day today. Army has been called in to assist the local administration in maintaining law and order.

Police said, two companies of CRPF and three companies of Indian Reserve Police and Armed Police have also been rushed to the district.

Official sources said, the trouble started on Friday morning after some anti-social elements picked up fight in Kishtwar. The clashes spread to other parts of the district with two groups indulging in arson and stone-pelting.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah directed senior state and civil officials including Police Chief Ashok Prasad to rush to the scene and try and defuse the situation.

Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, who chaired a meeting of prominent citizens of Jammu on Friday night, appealed for peace and harmony.
