India to get below-normal monsoon rains in June: IMD

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported on Tuesday that India is expected to experience below-normal monsoon rainfall in June, with the north and northwestern regions enduring a severe heatwave.

“The average June rainfall for the country as a whole is most likely to be below normal i.e. less than 92 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA),” the IMD said in an update to the monsoon forecast.

Since the onset of the southwest monsoon in Kerala on May 30, India has encountered a 20 percent deficiency in rainfall, according to the IMD.
