Hostels not tourist homes, KUHS tells HC as opposing plea of students against night curfew

Kochi: Kerala University of Health Sciences has taken a firm stand on night curfew in girls’ hostels of medical colleges when the High court considered a plea regarding the same. The university told the high court that hostels are not tourist homes for nightlife.

The university cleared its stance in an affidavit filed in court. In the affidavit, the university argued that people attain maturity at the age of 25 and whatever people say before this age could not be accepted. Female students of Kozhikode medical college had approached the high court against night curfews at the hostel. In their complaint, the students said that they were not admitted to the hostel after 9:30 pm.

In its affidavit, the university said that according to studies conducted on an international level, a person attains maturity at the age of 25 and proper guidance is necessary for taking any decision before this age.

The university also said that the students are staying in the hostel for studies not for enjoyment. So they do not have to go out at night. It further said that the libraries at the universities close at 9 pm and so asking them to enter the hostel by 9:30 pm was not wrong.

However, the students who are protesting against the night curfew stated the library stays open till 11:30 pm and they are being pressurised to get inside the hostel by 10 pm.
