The Geneva talks between Iran and six major world powers enter into the second day today. There are indications the two sides may be able to reach a breakthrough in the negotiations. US Secretary of State John Kerry will meet his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Javad Zarif in Geneva on the sidelines of the ongoing nuclear talks in Geneva today.
The surprise meet comes amid reported progress on Iran’s uranium enrichment in exchange for easing some of the sanctions on account of concerns over Tehran’s nuclear program. Mr. Kerry and Mr. Zarif will meet with European Union foreign policy Chief Catherine Ashton. Ashton has said that the talks on Iran’s nuclear program are getting into a serious phase and a concrete progress in expected. Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif said the talks will be highly labored but the aim is to cross over the wall of distrust created by Western policies.
The western nations allege that Iran has been trying to acquire nuclear weapons under the cover of its nuclear program. Iran denies these charges and insists that its nuclear program is for peaceful civilian energy purposes. This is the second round of talks since a new Iranian president took office in August.
