Finance dept sanctions Rs 50 lakh to pay rent arrears of helicopter for CM’s travels

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The finance department has sanctioned additional amount of Rs 50 lakh to pay the rent arrears of the helicopter hired for various purposes of the government. The outstanding rent is from October 20th to November 19th.

The helicopter has been hired from Chipson Aviation Company for the travel needs of the Chief Minister. RS 80 lakhs is the monthly rent of this chopper. The company had written a letter to the police chief demanding payment of dues. On December 4, the DGP handed over the letter to the Home Department. The letter was then handed over to the Finance Department as per the instructions of the Chief Minister. It was only after this that the finance department sanctioned the additional amount. Also, Chipson Aviation is yet to receive rent arrears from November 20 to December 19. It is reported that the company has given a letter in this regard as well.

The additional amount for rent was sanctioned after relaxing treasury regulations. Due to the financial crisis, at present, prior permission of the Finance Department is required to transfer bills above Rs 1 lakh from the treasury.

The agreement is between Delhi-based Chipson Aviation and the Kerala Police. The six-seater helicopter has been leased by the government for three years. The chopper can be used for travels up to 20 hours every month. An amount of Rs 90,000 will be charged for each additional hour.
