Evidence collection begins at actor and MLA Mukesh’s residence in molestation case

KOCHI: Evidence collection has commenced at the residence of actor and MLA Mukesh in connection with the ongoing molestation case. The police, accompanied by the complainant, conducted the evidence-gathering at Mukesh’s home in Marad, Kochi. However, due to Mukesh not handing over the house key as requested by the investigation team, the inspection, which was initially scheduled for late yesterday, had to be postponed.

The demand for Mukesh’s resignation as MLA has intensified amid the controversy. CPM state secretary MV Govindan asserted that there is no need for Mukesh to step down. Govindan pointed out that numerous MLAs and MPs across the country, who face similar allegations, have not resigned from their positions. Nonetheless, Govindan announced during a press conference that Mukesh would be removed from the state’s film policy-making committee.

According to recent data, 16 MPs and 135 MLAs in the country are currently accused of crimes against women, including 54 from the BJP, 23 from Congress, 17 from TDP and 13 from the Aam Aadmi Party. Despite these serious allegations, none of these legislators have resigned from their posts.

Govindan also highlighted that two MLAs in Kerala are currently facing similar charges, with one already in jail. He referenced several politicians, including Oommen Chandy, Kunjalikutty, Anil Kumar, Hibi Eden, Peethambarakurup and Shashi Tharoor, all of whom have faced allegations but have not resigned from their respective positions.

He further noted that figures like P.J. Joseph and Neelalohithadasan Nadar did not resign from their MLA posts, although they did step down from ministerial roles. Govindan emphasized that the legal system does not provide a mechanism for reinstating an accused individual if they resign from the legislature and are later proven innocent. Therefore, the party decided not to request Mukesh’s resignation. However, Govindan stressed that Mukesh should not receive any benefits as an MLA during the investigation and called for an independent and impartial inquiry to ensure justice for all parties involved.
