Kollam: The exasperated colleagues of Dr Vandana Das, who was killed in an attack by a patient at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital here, listed out the ‘systemic lapses’ that apparently result in the tragedy.
The doctors accused the police of not taking any precautionary measures to avert the chances of a possible attack. They also criticised the convention of appointing elderly persons as security guards. The securities must be able to resist such attacks, they said.
The doctors also slammed inadequate facilities in the respective hospital, where the attack happened. “No facilities were there to ensure immediate treatment to Vandana. This suggests the failure of the administrative mechanism”, they said.
Meanwhile, they asserted that the deceased must get justice without any delay. The procedures should not prolong and justice should not be delayed, demanded the doctors.
“This incident would lose its focus (media and public attention) once the election results (Karnataka polls) are declared tomorrow,” said the doctors. “A few days back, the Tanur boat tragedy had grabbed the headlines. Now, it is our news. This will definitely change tomorrow,” they pointed out.
The doctors urged the police to submit the chargesheet soon and to assure maximum punishment to the assailant. “The chief minister has approved the demands raised by KGMOA before the association called off its protest. However, how many years would it take to implement those guidelines?” they asked.
