D Y Chandrachud sworn in as Chief Justice, will serve as head of SC for two years

NEW DELHI: Justice D Y Chandrachud was sworn in as the Chief Justice of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to him at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan. He will serve as CJI for two years that is till November 10, 2024. He succeeds Justice U U Lalit and is the 50th Chief Justice of India.

Justice Chandrachud had served as Additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 to 2000. He was made additional judge of Bombay High Court on March 29 in 2000. He became the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court on October 31 in 2013 and a judge of the Supreme Court on May 13 in 2016.

D Y Chandrachud is the son of late Justice Y V Chandrachud, the longest-serving Chief Justice of India. Chandrachud took oath as CJI 44 years after his father was sworn in.
U U Lalit ended his brief tenure of 74 days on Tuesday. He took over as the Chief Justice of India on August 27.
