Chaos at juvenile home where teen accused of Delhi gang-rape is kept

New DelhiJuveniles at a reform home in Delhi today climbed onto the roof of the building and set fire to blankets and hurled stones at care-takers. It’s not clear what provoked them.The juvenile who is being tried for December’s gang-rape on a moving bus is housed at the same facility.The juveniles’ court in the capital has finished hearing his case. He was aged 17 at the time of the deadly assault on a young student and faces a maximum sentence of three years in a correctional facility. He has denied any involvement in the crime.

 delhi-gangrape_accused-295The verdict had been expected last month, but has been deferred because a petition in the Supreme Court argues that the teenager should be tried as an adult because of the serious nature of the offence.The crime, which saw the 23-year-old student victim die of internal injuries inflicted during the savage attack, generated widespread anger.Several weeks of protests pushed Parliament to pass a new law toughening sentences for rapists.

The juvenile was allegedly part of a gang of six men who raped the student and hit her male friend when he tried to defend her. One of the five adults died in jail in March. The trial of the other four is expected to wrap up in the next few months.The juvenile suspect, the youngest of six children according to his mother, was employed to clean the bus allegedly used for the attack and often slept rough or inside the vehicle, reports say.
