New Delhi: BJP leader Sandeep Warrier has approached the Attorney General of India R Venkataramani seeking permission to initiate criminal contempt of court proceedings against Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindu. The Kerala minister landed in the row for allegedly criticising the Supreme Court. As per the petition, Bindu stated that the Supreme Court has been supporting the agenda of the central government.
In the application, the BJP leader alleged that the minister’s remarks following the cancellation of technical university VC MS Rajashree’s appointment defamed and degraded the Supreme Court.
On November 18, minister R Bindu said the Supreme Court was standing with the policies of the Union government. She also said that efforts were being made to implement centralisation in the higher education sector. She said the apex court’s judgement was in line with the policies of the Centre.
The application filed with the attorney general noted that the statement made by the minister will influence the public. The minister does not enjoy the protection of freedom of expression guaranteed by Article 19 (1) (a) and she is bound to uphold the constitutional principles and the oath of office, it said.
