Actress attack case: HC allows to re-examine memory card

Kochi: In a major relief to the prosecution in the 2017 actress assault case, the Kerala High Court on Tuesday allowed the plea to examine the memory card which is in the custody of the trial court.

The memory card has to be sent for examination within two days and has to be completed in seven days. The analysis by the forensic department must not affect the trial proceedings of the case, the bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas stated. The further investigation on the actress attack case has to be completed by July 15 as per an earlier HC order.

The memory card contains visuals of the assault. An earlier examination had shown that the card was accessed unauthorised twice when it was under the custody of the trial court. It was found that the hash value of the memory card was changed.

The trial court had declined the plea of the prosecution for a re-examination to understand the implications of the change in hash value. The prosecution then approached the HC.

Actor Dileep, an accused in the case, had objected to the demand of the prosecution. He argued that the examination would further delay the trial. However, the government insisted that understanding what happened to the memory card was important to the ongoing probe. The survivor also pleaded that it is crucial to know if the visuals were leaked or not.
