Coimbatore: Rookie Ricky Donison jumped his start for the second race in succession to squander the chance of winning and handed a double victory to Nayan Chatterjee in the premier Euro JK 16 class at the JK Tyre FMSCI National Racing Championship here on Sunday.
Like Saturday, Donison was the first to cross the chequered flag in the 15-lap before being handed a 10-second penalty for a jump start in the third race of the opening weekend of the Championship.
After Kush Maini and Krishnaraaj Mahadik shared the honours in the two races on Saturday, Donison started the reverse grid on pole on Sunday.
Maini, starting behind Donison, had a better getaway and took the lead in the opening lap.
Soon after, Mahadik too got past Donison to be right behind Maini. The two had a fierce battle with Mahadik putting pressure on Maini, who struggled with tyres all throughout the race. Their battle eventually helped Donison who past the both of them to regain the lead. The 18-year-old was not threatened thereafter and cruised to the chequered only to face the disappointment of a time penalty.
Donison was eventually classified third behind Chatterjee and Mahadik, who were classified first and second respectively.
In the fourth and final race of the weekend, Chatterjee came up with a commanding drive from pole position to seal the top spot in as many races.
The win in the second race of the day was sweeter, considering he was pushed up the order after Donison’s jump start. Maini finished second ahead of Donison, who had settle for the third spot again.
The BMW engine powered cars for the feature race of the championship has been tweaked this season with a new gearbox, increased power and a paddle shift leading to faster lap times of up to four seconds at the circuit here.
