Ishrat Jahan case: IPS officer Pandey surrenders before CBI court in Ahmedabad

Newdelhi: Senior IPS officer of Gujarat PP Pandey surrenders before a special CBI court in Ahmedabad today in connection with the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case. Pandey, an Additional Director General of Police in the state has surrendered a day after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the Supreme Court on Monday. Apex court bench headed by Justice B.S. Chauhan dismissed his bail plea by criticizing Pandey for remaining absconder for last two months. Earlier, Gujarat High Court and Special CBI court had also rejected his anticipatorily bail plea last week.

Reports that 1982-batch IPS officer Pandey was a Joint Commissioner of Police in Ahmedabad Crime branch, when Ishrat, a Mumbai-based girl student was gunned down along with her 3 accomplice in an encounter with Gujarat police in 2004. Pandey was heading Ahmedabad city Crime Branch- which had executed the fake encounter. Police had then claimed that four were terrorists on a mission to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. However, according to the CBI charge sheet filed last month, the encounter was fake and stage managed in a joint operation by Gujarat Police and Intelligence Bureau. Seven police officers, including Pandey, have been named as accused and charged with murder and criminal conspiracy, among others.
