Thiruvananthapuram: The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, in its meeting convened on Wednesday, has decided not to take immediate action against Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) M R Ajith Kumar, who is facing charges from a ruling party MLA. Despite strong opinions voiced by key ally CPI, the Chief Minister’s apparent stance on delaying any action until the investigation is completed was reiterated by LDF convenor T P Ramakrishnan.
He expressed support for the state government’s steps regarding the allegations against Ajith Kumar. “Steps have already been taken by the Home Department. If the investigation report indicates any wrongdoing by Ajith Kumar, he will not be protected,” he stated, reiterating that the LDF and the government are aligned on this stance.
Addressing concerns about Ajith Kumar’s alleged interactions with the RSS, Ramakrishnan stated that the key issue is the content of those discussions. Ajith Kumar’s name has been mentioned in complaints filed by MLA Anwar and in connection with the disruption of Pooram in Thrissur, he noted. “All such complaints will be thoroughly investigated,” Ramakrishnan confirmed.
He stressed that the LDF believes in taking action based on verified evidence, not merely on allegations. “We do not punish individuals based on accusations alone. The truth of the allegations must be verified, and if proven, appropriate and severe punishment will be enforced,” he affirmed.
CPI’s stance
During the meeting, the Communist Party of India (CPI) strongly advocated for Ajith Kumar’s removal from his post. CPI leader Binoy Viswam had previously met with CPM State Secretary M V Govindan to discuss this stance, which was upheld during the meeting.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also pushed for Ajith Kumar’s removal, arguing that the ongoing allegations against both him and the Chief Minister’s political secretary were critical issues that needed addressing to maintain the LDF’s credibility.
EP’s removal
Ramakrishnan also clarified that former LDF convenor E P Jayarajan was not removed from his position due to his meeting with BJP leader and Union Minister Prakash Javadekar. “Jayarajan was removed as part of an organisational decision,” he noted.
Additionally, Ramakrishnan praised the government’s efforts in Wayanad’s rehabilitation, noting improvements in Supplyco’s stock following past shortages.
The remarks came after Ramakrishnan’s first LDF meeting since his appointment as convenor.
