Kochi: The setting was perfect. But the heroes didn’t turn up, much to the disappointment of the people yearning for the arrival of a superhero accompanied by thunderous background music, ready to rescue the wailing women calling out for help. People were ready to witness an act of courage and grit as the situation demanded it. Alas, nothing of the sort happened. Not even one of their superheroes appeared on the scene, leaving the stage for the rather less heroic general secretary to utter some explanations in an attempt to seek more time to chalk out an escape route for the superheroes from the scene of disaster.
On Monday, AMMA general secretary Siddique looked very unconvincing when he was trying to explain the Malayalam film actors’ organisation’s official stand regarding the shocking revelations in the Hema Committee report. But, even underneath the pale countenance of the general secretary, one could easily identify the macho confidence of the Malayalam film world, which shouts to the world – ‘ this too would be forgotten and the show will go on uninterrupted’.
In films, one witnesses heroes coming out of nowhere to rescue women from the devilish clutches of villains. Thousands of lovers, sisters, mothers, and even strange women were rescued by virtuous, heroic, and handsome heroes, crushing the villains, demolishing skyscrapers at will, razing down mountains with ease, and wiping out a large battalion of rivals with contempt. But on Monday, they were not to be seen anywhere in the picture.
General secretary said that, AMMA would come up with a response only after studying the report well. As of now, they are busy with the upcoming show of Amma. His argument that a sentence or even a word uttered carelessly would have serious repercussions in the future as the subject is quite sensitive. Even if that argument could be taken as the seriousness of the organisation, one expects a word of solidarity to the suffering womenhood from the powerful organisation. But, it didn’t happen.
Kerala was staring at a report full of sighs of despair, tears of loss, pain of disappearing pride, and a wail of crushed hope. Mothers, sisters, lovers, wives, and strange women could be seen trampled down in these pages of a report unnecessarily and unreasonably stalled for around five years. As one goes through these pages, one could feel the fear and anguish of hundreds of women, used and manipulated by a gang called ‘mafia’ by the committee itself.
The content is not challenged by anyone from the film industry so far. So, it could be interpreted as real-life stories. Right before the very eyes of the superheroes, the pride of the female artists has been challenged and defeated consistently over the years. The adulations and accolades being showered upon the heroes seem unworthy, and the feet of clay have become all the more apparent.
The silence from the part of the mainstream actors reverberates over the pandemonium created by the media over the release of the report. But, more questions would be raised in the coming days as more and more details would come out to be discussed in public domain regarding the report.
