AI-cameras: MVD starts issuing notices for traffic violations, fines from May 20 onwards

AI-driven surveillance cameras installed as part of the ‘Safe Kerala Project’ have started to issue notices for traffic violations in Kannur district.Officials posted in the RTO enforcement office in Mattanur have started examining the visuals. As of now, no penalty is being levied for violations, and the notices are issued to create awareness among the public. However, MVD will collect fines for traffic offences from May 20 onwards.

Meanwhile, the authorities are yet to field an adequate number of employees in the control rooms across the state. In Mattanur, only two employees are currently overseeing the whole operation in place of 10 employees recommended to examine visuals and codify them. Keltron is yet to recruit the necessary staff.

Presently, 50 AI cameras are installed in Kannur. The visual of traffic violations across the state would initially reach the central control room in Thiruvananthapuram before it is transmitted to control rooms in each district. The notice is issued after officials examine the visuals and verify whether traffic rules are violated.
