Shashi Tharoor rules out contesting for Congress Working Committee membership

New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor virtually ruled out contesting for Congress Working Committee membership in the upcoming plenary session. He said he was not considering running in any party elections.

Speaking to news agency PTI, the Thiruvananthapuram MP said he had made his point already by contesting in the presidential polls and now it’s for others to step forward.

“Elections are healthy for the party, but having participated in one and lost, it is not my business to tell leadership what to do,” he said.“I am stepping back a little bit from the demand for Congress Working Committee polls. Majority view in the All India Congress Committee will prevail on whether CWC elections should be held,” he added.

Tharoor last year challenged the high command’s pick, Mallikarjun Kharge, for the post of Congress president. The “unexpected” support for Tharoor in the contest had triggered speculations that he may throw his hat in the ring at CWC if the party did not include him.

While contesting in the presidential polls, Tharoor had asserted that he would conduct CWC elections if he won.

At present, AK Antony, Oommen Chandy and KC Venugopal are the members from Kerala in the CWC. Antony has retired from active politics and relocated to Thiruvananthapuram. Health issues are troubling Oommen Chandy. As a result, both leaders are likely to distance themselves. It is almost certain that Venugopal will continue. It is also likely that Ramesh Chennithala will find a place.

The 85th Plenary Session of Congress will be held from February 24 to 26 in Raipur, Chhattisgarh.
