Thiruvananthapuram: Director Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Tuesday stepped down as chairman of KR Narayanan Film Institute of Visual Science and Arts (KRNNIVSA), Kottayam.
On January 21, institute director Shankar Mohan had stepped down from the post following a months-long protest against alleged casteism on the campus. Adoor had backed Shankar throughout the protest and even after an enquiry committee found that the allegations were not completely baseless.
In his resignation letter, Adoor condemned the allegations against Shankar. The “baseless” accusations were attempts to impair his four decades of exemplary service to the film industry, said Adoor in his resignation letter.
He criticised the media for ‘failing to reveal the truth’ behind the controversy. During a press conference to announce his decision, Adoor said that he had handed over the resignation letter to chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan following a discussion with him on Monday.
The students of KRNNIVSA had declared an indefinite protest on December 5, alleging caste discrimination during the admission process of a Dalit applicant.
The protesters also alleged that sanitation workers were discriminated against based on caste and forced to clean the toilets in the director’s residence. However, Adoor had discarded the allegations. Adoor said that the sanitation workers in the institute do not belong to the scheduled castes.
