No directive can be given to stop construction of Vizhinjam port; fishermen can protest, should not disrupt project, says HC

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court said the fishermen can protest but the Vizhinjam port project should not be obstructed. The court also stated that no direction can be given to stop the construction.

The court’s verbal reference was while considering the plea filed by Adani Group seeking police protection in the project area. The Adani Group alleged that the police are cooperating with the fishermen’s strike.

‘The fishermen can protest against the project, but should not obstruct. If there are complaints about the scheme, it can be raised at the appropriate place. The protest must be within the bounds of the law. The directive to stop the construction cannot be given due to the protest,’ the high court said.Adani demanded the deployment of central force or police for security in Vizhinjam. The government said there is no need for central forces. The government informed the court that the state police would provide security. Meantime, the fishermen’s strike has entered the 14th day. The third ministerial discussion with the protesters will be held today.
