Student dies of food poisoning; three children in ICU, inspections will be carried out at shawarma outlets in the state

KASARGOD: The Food safety department has been directed to conduct a statewide inspection following a student’s death due to food poisoning after consuming shawarma. The inspection will be carried out at Shawarma outlets. The main aspects to be checked is whether the shop is licensed, cleanliness, the meat used and mayonnaise. 16-year old Devananda the only daughter of the late Narayanan and EV Prasanna, a native of Mundacheeta in Karivellur Peralam panchayath, died of food poisoning.

She ate the shawarma on Saturday. More than 30 people are being treated for eating shawarma from the same cool bar. Three of these children are in the ICU. The shop is owned by Pilavalappil Kunhahammed, a native of Kalikkadavu. Police said the man, who is abroad, will be charged in the case. Two employees were arrested earlier. Managing partner Anas from Mangalore and Sandesh Rai from Nepal who made the shawarma were arrested.
