Thiruvananthapuram: A total of 8,778 new Covid-19 cases were reported in Kerala on Wednesday. The test positivity rate was recorded at 13.45 percent.

The district-wise statistics of positive cases: Ernakulam – 1,226, Kozhikode – 1,098, Malappuram – 888, Kottayam – 816, Kannur – 748, Thiruvananthapuram – 666, Thrissur – 544, Alappuzha – 481, Palakkad – 461, Kollam – 440, Kasaragod – 424, Pathanamthitta – 373, Idukki – 340, Wayanad – 273.

None of the UK returnees tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. So far, 104 people returned from UK, 7 from South Africa and 1 from Brazil tested positive for the virus infection. 107 of them have recovered. So far, 11 patients have been identified with the mutant virus strain.

65,258 samples were tested in the last 24 hours. In total, 1,39,52,957 samples including routine sample, sentinel sample, CBNAAT, Truenat, POCT, PCR, RTLAMP, antigen were sent for the tests.

22 deaths were confirmed due to Covid-19 in the last 24 hours. The total number of deaths in the state has touched 4,836. Test results from Alappuzha NIV are awaited to confirm other suspected Covid deaths.

205 of the coronavirus patients came from outside the state. 7,905 people contracted the virus through contact. The infection source of 627 persons remains unidentified.

41 health workers also tested positive for Covid on Wednesday. Among them, 13 were from Kannur, 7 from Kottayam, 5 from Thrissur, 4 from Wayanad, 3 from Ernakulam, 2 each from  Palakkad and Kollam and 1 each from Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode and  Kasaragod.

2,642 recoveries were also reported in the state. The district-wise statistics of recoveries: Thiruvananthapuram – 338, Kollam – 173, Pathanamthitta – 194, Alappuzha – 115, Kottayam – 236, Idukki – 57, Ernakulam – 201, Thrissur – 249, Palakkad – 68, Malappuram – 261, Kozhikode – 472, Wayanad – 66, Kannur – 140 and Kasaragod – 72.

There are 58,245 active Covid-19 cases in the state. 11,25,775 people have recovered from the disease. 1,90,199 people are currently under observation in the state. Out of this, 1,81,873 are under home/institutional quarantine and 8,326 people are in hospitals. 1,384 people were taken to hospitals on Wednesday.

4 new hotspots were identified on Wednesday while no place was removed from the list. Currently, there are 420 hotspots in the state.
