21 dead as recreational boat sinks in Thooval Theeram in Tanur; rescue ops underway

Tanur: A recreational boat sank at Thooval Theeram, Ottumpuram, near here, killing at least 21 passengers, according to unofficial sources. Details of the deceased are unavailable at the moment. Five of them are reportedly children. The accident reportedly occurred around 7 pm on Sunday.The boat was carrying about 35 passengers, according to onlookers. Twelve people have been rescued so far. The operation is still underway. Police, Kerala Fire And Rescue Services and natives are involved. Many of the rescued individuals are in critical condition, it was learnt.

A person who took part in the rescue mission reported that the boat was taken to the shore. He said it was being ripped up to see if anyone had been stuck inside it. Lack of vision and the particularities of geographical location make it difficult to complete the operation, he added. He made the comments at 9.40 pm in a telephone interview with Mathrubhumi News.

Most of the passengers on the boat were from the Parappanangadi and Tanur regions, and the beach was crowded due to the holiday.The rescued individuals have been admitted to hospitals such as Nahas and JS Mission in Parappanangadi, Tirurangadi taluk hospital, and various hospitals in Tanur.Nishan, a native, said that safety measures were not followed when he visited the location with his family members. He did not take the boat trip.

Thooval Theeram is situated on the banks of the estuary of the Kadalundi river joining the Arabian Sea at Ottumpuram, on the Parappanangadi-Tanur municipal boundary.
