1 killed in police firing after mob attacks police patrolling party in Assam

In Assam, one youth died in police firing and another sustained injury after a mob attacked a police patrolling party in Jorhat district last night. State Law and Order IGP, S N Singh said that the incident occurred at Mariani area where a huge mob attacked some people in their superstitious belief that they were ghosts. When the police reached the spot to rescue the victims, the mob also attacked the policemen.

One sepoy sustained serious injury. One 14 years old youth died and another injured when police resorted to firing to disperse the mob. The district administration has suspended the In-charge of the Debarpara police outpost. Security has been beefed up in the area.The local people have protested the police firing.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has ordered an inquiry into the incident and said that nobody will be spared if found guilty. Official sources said that Mr. Gogoi has announced an ex-gratia of 5 lakh rupees to the next of kin of the youth killed in police firing and 50 thousand rupees to the seriously injured persons. The Chief Minister has also asked the Home department’s Secretary, Atowa Munda to go to Mariani to take stock of the situation.
