Wrestlers march to Parliament turns violent, police detain wrestlers

NEW DELHI: The march staged by the wrestlers from Jantar Mantar to the new Parliament seeking action against Brij Bhushan MP over allegations of sexual harassment, turned violent. The wrestlers jumped the barricades set up by the police and moved forward. A huge police force was deployed to stop the protest, but they went ahead bypassing them. The march was led by Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik. Sakshi Malik detained was manhandled by the police. The protesters squatted on the road. Unconfirmed reports said they were dragged and removed from there. The police have completely surrounded the protesters.

The wrestlers had earlier announced that they will hold a ‘Mahila Mahapanchayat’ protest in front of the new Parliament building inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today at any cost. Also announced that Khap panchayats of various states would reach here to support the wrestlers. A tight security was arranged here following that. The protestors moved forward despite all this. Barricades were erected in three places of the road to prevent them from proceeding.
