Kannur: The tiger on prowl which was captured by the authorities in Kannur yesterday died a few hours ago. The big cat which has been spreading panic in the Adakkathode for over a week was tranquillised by the forest officials at a farmland in Kariyam Kappu on Thursday evening.
Yesterday, the tiger was tranquilised eventually after a series of failed attempts. The animal had made it a habit to prey on pet dogs in the region ever since it made its presence there. Until the tiger was captured, curfew was imposed in Adakkathode and adjacent regions for over days.
The forest officials had said that the tiger captured in Kariyam Kappu had injuries all over its body while it was captured. The carcass of the animal is likely to be taken to Pookode veterinary college for postmortem. With the death of the tiger this year, now there are only two tigers remaining in Kannur district as per the census data.
The tiger that was tranquilised had fallen into a gutter in a farmland in the locality. It was then caged and taken to the Kannavam forest office. Officials were mulling on taking the animal to Neyyar. But the tiger died before it could be shifted.
