Pension arrear angle in limelight as differently-abled Kozhikode man dies by suicide

Kozhikode: A differently-abled man of Muthukad in Chakkittapara panchayat here on Tuesday died by suicide. The deceased has been identified as Pappachan (77) alias Joseph.

Pappachan had not received his pension for five months. Earlier, he had given letters to Chakkittapara panchayat authorities and Muthukad police regarding the dire financial crisis he is in. There is no option than death if the pension is not available within 15 days, he wrote in the letter. According to reports, he also had a plan to intimate the district collector over the matter.

Pappachan’s plight was covered in the media. The death comes at this juncture. He was found hanging at his house by afternoon.

He has a 47-year-old daughter, who also is differently-abled and bedridden.
Meanwhile, panchayat authorities claimed that he had other income sources and was not extremely poor. In spite of this, panchayat had provided him food, they claimed. He reportedly had income from MGNREGA works. The authorities also claimed that Pappachan used to issue suicide threats often. The bedridden daughter was taken to a relief centre, they added.
Meanwhile, police said that it has registered an FIR in connection with the incident and an investigation has been launched.
