Former Kerala minister KP Viswanathan passes away

Thrissur: Veteran Congress leader and former Kerala minister KP Viswanathan passed away. He was 83.Viswanathan breathed his last at a private hospital here at 9:35 am on Friday.Viswanathan was one of the senior Congress leaders hailing from Thrissur.

KP Viswanathan was born on April 22, 1940. He did his graduation from Thrissur Kerala Varma College. He entered into active politics through the Youth Congress. He had served as the president of the organisation at the district level in the period between (1967-70).
The Congress stalwart served as a minister twice and was elected as an MLA six times.
KP Viswanathan had served as Minister for Forests twice during UDF rule, in the cabinets led by Karunaurakan and Oommen Chandy. However, he had to quit the post before completing his term on both occasions.

In the period between 1987 and 2001, he was continuously elected to the legislative assembly from the Kodakara constituency. Viswanathan had to face consecutive defeats in the years 2006 and 2011 when had contested against CPM’s C Raveendranath in the assembly elections.
