THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Ernakulam-born novelist and short story writer NS Madhavan has been honoured with the prestigious Ezhuthachan Award by the Kerala state government, recognizing his comprehensive contributions to Malayalam language and literature. The award, named after the legendary Malayalam poet Thunchath Ezhuthachan, includes a cash prize of five lakh rupees, a sculpture and a certificate of appreciation.

NS Madhavan, celebrated as a leading voice among contemporary Malayalam writers, gained acclaim with his short story collection ‘Higuita’, which won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, Odakuzhal Award and Muttathu Varkey Award. Known for his distinct style and critical social commentary, he has received numerous accolades over the years, including the Padmarajan Award, Padma Prabha Award and VP Sivakumar Memorial Keli Award.

In addition to ‘Higuita’, Madhavan’s notable works include collections like ‘Chulemedile Shavangal’, ‘Thiruth’, ‘Panchakanyakakal’, ‘Paryayakadhakal’ and ‘Bheemachan’, as well as his novel ‘Lanthanbatheriyile Luthiniyakal’. His writing, often layered with cultural and social insights, has garnered a devoted readership in Malayalam literature.

Beyond his literary achievements, Madhavan is a respected social commentator. His academic journey began at Maharaja’s College, followed by studies at Mar Ivanios College and the Kerala University Department of Finance. He joined IAS in 1975, where he later served as Special Secretary in the Finance Department of Kerala.

Madhavan’s literary journey began in 1970 when his short story ‘Sishu’ won first prize in a competition, marking the start of a prolific career. Over the years, he has been a recipient of multiple awards for individual short stories, including the Mulberry and VP Shivakumar awards. He is married to Sheela Reddy, daughter of renowned writer and blogger Meenakshi Reddy Madhavan.
