Kollam: The Attingal Fast Track Special Court awarded a 20-year rigorous imprisonment to a 72-year-old man for sexually abusing his granddaughter. The accused, found guilty under the POCSO Act, was also fined Rs 4 lakh.
The incident occurred in November 2019 when the survivor, who was residing with the accused’s daughter, faced attack on the day the man visited her. Fearful and traumatized, the girl kept the ordeal hidden from others.
It wasn’t until she started displaying unusual behavior, frequently visiting a friend’s house without informing her family, that her mother grew concerned and sought counseling for her daughter. It was during counseling at Mahila Mandir that the girl finally disclosed the rape and sexual assault she had endured.
Upon receiving the complaint, the Poojappura police initiated an investigation. Realising that the incident fell within the jurisdiction of the Mangalapuram Police Station, FIR was registered, and investigations were completed under the supervision of Inspector Sajeesh H L.
During the trial, the prosecution presented a compelling case, including testimony from 14 witnesses and 18 documents. Special Public Prosecutor M Muhsin represented the prosecution throughout the proceedings.
After careful consideration of the evidence, the court found the accused guilty of sexual assault and rape under the POCSO Act. A 20-year prison term and Rs 4 lakh fine was ruled by the court and Rs 3.5 lakh from the fine is to be given to the survivor as compensation.
Moreover, acknowledging the survivor’s entitlement to compensation through the Legal Services Authority, the court directed appropriate action to ensure she receives the support she deserves.
